PRODUCT FEATURES
Record categorisation is the process of grouping programs into categories such as Feature, Episode, etc, and types such as Live Action, Animation, etc. This enables clients to appropriately manage their catalogs, and for end users to search for and find the content they are looking for more quickly.
The highest level of record type categorisation.
Category | Description |
---|---|
Feature | Feature refers to a feature-length film, typically designed for theatrical exhibition, but sometimes also released directly to home media such as video on demand or DVD. |
Supplemental Content | Supplemental content refers to additional information or features that are related to a film or TV show, such as behind-the-scenes footage, cast interviews, or deleted scenes. |
Short Form Content | Short form content refers to any type of media content that is shorter in length than a full-length feature film or television show. Examples include short films, music videos, and television commercials. |
Show | TV Show is a term used to refer to a television program that is made up of multiple episodes or seasons. This could include scripted dramas, comedies, news, reality shows, and more. |
Season | A TV season is the period of time in which a particular television show is broadcast. It typically consists of a set number of episodes (usually between 10 and 26) and a predetermined length of time (usually between 10 and 30 weeks). |
Episode | A TV episode is an individual instalment of a television series. It is typically a self-contained story that may or may not be part of an overarching story arc. Usually, TV episodes are broadcast in a specific sequence in relation to the other episodes of a particular season. |
Storyline | Refers to a very short type of Episode, typically a cartoon that has a duration of 3-5 minutes. |
Specials | A TV special is a television program which is either a one-off or part of a limited series of episodes. It usually features guest stars, different storylines, or other features that make it stand out from regular programs. Examples are Christmas Specials and other Seasonal Specials. |

Type | Description |

Alternative Edit | An Alternative Edit is an alternate version of a film or TV show which has been edited for a different purpose. This could be for a different age rating, for a different language, or for a different runtime. |
Alternative Take | An Alternative Take is a film or television scene that has been re-shot or edited differently from the original take. It is usually used to replace a scene that did not work as well or to add new elements to the original scene. |
Animation | Animation is a type of film and television genre that is characterised by the use of artificially created images to create movement. It is created using computer-generated imagery (CGI) or hand-drawn images, which are then edited and composited together to create the illusion of movement. Animation is used in a variety of contexts, including feature films, television series, commercials, and video games. |
Anniversary Edition | Anniversary Edition typically refers to a movie or TV show re-release or re-mastered version that is released in honor of a special occasion, such as an anniversary or milestone. This edition may contain special features, such as additional scenes, interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage. |
Audio Only | Audio Only is a term used to describe media files that only contain an audio track. These media files do not contain any video components, such as visual images or animations. Audio Only media files are commonly used in film and television metadata, and are typically used to capture and store information about sound effects, soundtracks, voice-overs, and other audio elements used in movies and television shows. |
Behind the Scenes | Behind the Scenes is a term used to describe any additional material or content related to a film or television production that is not part of the main production itself. This might include interviews with the cast and crew, clips from the set, or other behind-the-scenes footage and images. |
Biography | A detailed account of someone's life, often produced as a documentary or feature film. |
Bonus Content | Additional materials that accompany a film or TV show, such as interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, etc. |
Christmas | Content related to the holiday season and Christmas celebrations. |
Clip | A short segment of video extracted from a longer piece, often used for promotional or advertising purposes. |
Commercial | An advertisement created to promote a product or service. |
Costume Test | Footage of actors in costume, typically used to test the visual look of a character before filming. |
Current Affairs | TV programs or news segments that cover the latest news and events. |
Deleted Scenes | Portions of a film or TV show that were removed during editing and did not make it to the final version. |
Docu-Series | A series of documentaries that follow a particular topic or subject over multiple episodes. |
Easter Egg | A hidden feature or reference within a film or TV show that requires a certain action to reveal. |
Episodic | A TV show format in which each episode tells a separate story, while also contributing to a larger narrative. |
EPK | Electronic Press Kit - promotional materials created to promote a film or TV show to the media. |
Event | Footage of live events such as concerts, festivals, or sporting events. |
Fan Content | User-generated content created by fans of a particular film or TV show. |
Featurette | A short film or video that provides an in-depth look at a particular aspect of a film or TV show. |
Gag Reel | A collection of bloopers and outtakes from a film or TV show. |
Game / Quiz Show | A TV show format in which contestants compete in games or quizzes. |
Game Show | A TV show format in which contestants compete in various games. |
Halloween | Content related to Halloween celebrations and traditions. |
Hero Interactive | Interactive content that allows users to control the actions of a hero character in a story. |
Hosted Introduction | An introduction to a film or TV show presented by a host or narrator. |
How-To | Instructional videos that teach viewers how to perform a specific task or activity. |
Interstitial | Short videos that are shown between other content, often used for advertising or promotions. |
Interview | A conversation between two or more people, typically used to discuss a particular topic or subject. |
Live Action | A film or TV show that features real actors and physical sets, as opposed to animation or CGI. |
Live Action / Animation | A format that combines live-action footage with animated elements. |
Making Of | A documentary-style video that provides an in-depth look at the production process of a film or TV show. |
Mini-Doc | A short documentary film that typically covers a specific topic or event. |
Montage | A sequence of short clips or images that are edited together to create a specific mood or effect. |
Music Video | A short film or video that accompanies a piece of music, typically featuring the artist or band. |
New Years | Content related to New Year's celebrations and traditions. |
News & Current Affairs | A TV show format that covers the latest news and events. |
News Special | A TV program that covers a specific news event in-depth. |
Newsreel | A short film or video featuring news and events from a particular period of time. |
Other | Content that does not fit into any of the other categories. |
Press Conference | A gathering of reporters and press members to hear a statement or announcement from a particular person or entity. |
Profile | A short documentary-style film or video focusing on a particular person or entity. |
Promo | A short promotional video for a film or television show. |
Reality | A television show featuring unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, typically involving real people. |
Recap | A short summary of a film or television show, often used as a refresher before the next episode airs. |
Screen Test | A test of an actor’s performance, typically done before filming begins. |
Season (Other) | Content that does not fit into any of the other season categories. |

Sports | Featuring sports-related content, such as a game or tournament. |
Spot | A short promotional video for a product or service. |
